Who Am I?

I was born one blustery February day in Pawating Hospital in Niles, Michigan and moved to Detroit, MI when I was a year old. I grew up in Detroit until we moved to Grand Haven, MI when I was in fifth grade. I lived there all the way through high school.

In fourth grade, I learned to write haiku, limerick, and other forms of poetry, and I realized that I liked writing. I also enjoyed telling stories to kids on our street. Of course, making up stories with the other kids as characters made my stories pretty popular. When I was in fifth grade, my future step-dad Mark suggested I start writing my stories down, and I first realized I could be a writer. At the age of eleven, my (unpublished) picture book, Samantha's Adventure received a Young Author's Award, and I got to go away to a writing conference for kids for a day.

In sixth grade, I finished my work one day and was sitting in class bored to my bones, when I decided to find something to do. I decided to write a story, and began writing a story about some kids who have to figure out who stole their jack-o-lanterns. (Many years later, this story grew into a book called The Junkyard Club).

I knew I wanted to be a writer, but I wasn't certain I would be able to make a living writing. My parents encouraged me to get a teaching degree since I loved kids, so that's what I did, minoring in art and English at Alma College.

After college, I lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan for a year and then moved to Lexington, KY, where I fell in love with the rolling hills, avidly explored the wilderness areas of the Daniel Boone National Forest and Red River Gorge, and watched enthralled as sleek thoroughbreds thundered past at the racetrack. I spent time working as a camp counselor, substitute teacher, cashier, Art Goes to School presenter, chili dog chef, vet tech, children's church leader, and preschool teacher, all the while scribbling away in every spare moment.

I am able to combine my talents and interests working for Write@Home where I teach homeschooled students writing. Since I am also homeschooling my own son, this is a job I really enjoy. If you are curious about homeschooling, I recommend the book The Homescholing Answer Book by Linda Dobson.

My son was born at home in a tub of warm water with a midwife in attendance in 1998. I passionately support midwifery, homebirth, water birth, breastfeeding, attachment parenting, and homeschooling. I now live in MI with my son, two black dogs, and a fish named Fishy. I am an active member of Pathway Community Church and a homeschooling single mom. I spend my spare time exploring the world with my son, reading, writing, camping, canoeing, hiking in the woods, and working on our fixer-upper house. I hope you enjoy reading my book! I still enjoy reading it myself.
