So, You Want To Be a Writer?

Here's my advice for all aspiring authors.

  1. READ.

  2. Read a lot.

  3. Write. Write poems, stories, paragraphs, letters, sentences, ideas, notes, web pages, and whatever else you feel like writing. Share them with others if you want to, or keep them safely hidden in a special folder of your own in a special place. Keep a diary or journal - it's fun to look back on when you're older, too. The more you write the better you will become at writing. If it interests you, take a writing class or attend a writing conference. Read books on writing and grammer to improve your writing skills.

  4. Keep doing the first three things, and don't give up. The people who become successful writers are the ones who don't give up. Don't let anyone discourage you from reaching for your dream. If you want to do it, you can do it.

Now, about getting published. That can be a little bit more difficult at times, but once again, the key is never giving up. Writers love stories about other famous writers who were rejected dozens or hundreds of times before anyone would publish them. Did you know:

  • Dr. Suess's first book And To Think I Saw It All On Mulberry Street was rejected by twenty-seven different publishers before he found a twenty-eighth to publish it? And then it sold over six million copies.

  • Thomas Carlyle loaned his manuscript of The French Revolution to a friend, and the friend's servant burned it to start a fire, so Carlyle had to re-write the whole book!?

  • The movie Star Wars was rejected by every movie studio in Hollywood before 20th Century Fox agreed to produce it? Now, it is one of the highest money-making movies ever.

  • Jack London received 600 rejections before he sold his first story?

  • Louis L'Amour received 350 rejections before publishing his first book? He went on to publish over 100 books that sold over 200 million copies. He also rceived a special Congressional gold medal for his contributions to the nation through his books.

  • The famous American writer F. Scott Fizgerald papered the walls of a room in his home with rejection letters? He is the author of The Great Gatsby, a classic American novel.

  • John Grisham's first book was rejected 45 times before he found a publisher? It went on to sell over 60 million copies.

So, if ten people tell you you can't write or you should give up, Don't Listen To Them. If twenty or one hundred people tell you to give up, that you can't be a writer, Don't Listen To Them. If your parents or your teachers or your friends tell you to give up, Don't Listen To Them. If you want to be a writer, you CAN be a writer. Just write, learn, practice, and do what you need to do to make your drem come true - and don't ever give up on yourself.
